Teen class at Southside Aikido Club concentrates on basic technique, emphasizing the blending of energy between nage (defender) and uke (attacker). Students become skilled at ukemi (falling), from basic rolls to breakfalls, learning to stay connected to nage. Proper breathing and centering (zanshin) are an important part of the practice. Training with bokken (wooden sword) and jo (short staff) is included to enhance understanding of empty hand techniques, many of which are derived from the sword.
