We as parents and educators are concerned about the escalating level of violence in our society. Today's young people are exposed to a constant barrage of violent programming and are faced with the possibility of actual physical confrontation to a far greater extent than ever before.
Southside Aikido Club offers a peaceful alternative to the "might makes right" message so prevalent in today's world.
Aikido (the way of harmony) is a unique martial art based on co-operation, not competition. The Aikidoist, rather than meeting force with force, blends with the attacker's movement, evading and effectively neutralizing the attack.
There are widely recognized benefits to be derived from practicing any martial art. Children learn self-discipline, confidence and respect for themselves and others in a formal -but fun- atmosphere.
Aikido because of it's emphasis on mind body coordination, teaches children to locate and control their "energy centers" resulting in a more focused, alert and self-regulated child.
Since there are no tournaments in Aikido, the child receives all of the positive benefits of martial arts training without the sometimes unfortunate "side effects" of competition. Aikido teaches a "win/win" approach to conflict resolution. In Aikido no child should ever feel like a "loser".
Aikido is a purely defensive Art - children are not taught that punching and kicking are acceptable ways of dealing with conflict. Rather, they learn that aggression only leads to self defeat. If you share these values, we invite you and your child to visit the Southside Aikido Club and participate in our classes.
